About last night…

Baltimore 5, at Boston 3 - W: Bedard (11-4) L: Beckett (13-5) S: Walker (4)

The Orioles were able to overcome a shaky start from starter Eric Bedard and take the first game of their three game series at Fenway Park. Bedard only gave up two hits and strcuk out six over six innings, but he walked five batters.

Brian Roberts got the offense going with a lead-off home run to begin the game and a double in the third for the Orioles first two runs. He has now raised his average to a team best .317

The Red Sox offensive output come from one man on Tuesday evening, David Ortiz. Ortiz was 3-4 with two home runs and 3 RBIs. Coco Crisp had the only other hit, a single in the ninth.

Josh Beckett, looking for his 14th win on the season, is now 4-5 in his last nine starts. His ERA at Fenway is more than double what it is on the road (4.28 at home versus 1.62 away from Fenway).

The Red Sox new and improved bullpen with the addition of Eric Gagne will be hard to score runs, but the offense really needs to pick it up and start scoring runs. Otherwise, the bullpen might just bend then break.

Chicago Sox 3, at NY Yankees 16 - W: Mussina (6-7) L: Contreras (5-14)

Wow, what an offensive explosion. The eight home runs hit by the Yankees tied a team record and was last done on June 28, 1939 against the Philadelphia Athletics. Hideki Matsui hit two while Bobby Abreu, Robbie Cano, Shelly Duncan, Jorge Posada, Johnny Damon and Melky Cabrera each hit one. Ironically, Alex Rodriguez did not contribute a home run and is still sitting on #499. He is 0 for his last 17.

Matsui, to put it simply, is on a tear. In the month of July he hit 13 home runs and drove in 28 runs. He batted .351 (39-111) and slugged .682. He upped his average to .293 on the year and now ranks 7th in the AL in home runs and 6th in RBIs.

Mike Mussina gave up three runs and six hits in six innings. The Yankees have now scored a combined 54 runs in their last three games at Yankee Stadium. Astounding.

Toronto 2, at Tampa Bay 0 - W: Litsch (4-4) L: Jackson (2-11) S: Accardo (18)

Here are two names you need to remember for next year: Dustin McGowan and Jesse Litsch. Both of these guys have shown great maturity in their starts over the past month for the Blue Jays.

Litsch, a former Devil Rays bat boy, threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Rays for his fourth win of the year.

Each team had eight hits, but a Matt Stairs RBI single in the 2nd and a Vernon Wells RBI double in the 8th proved to be the difference in the game.
